Celtic Triad ... Three best to have in plenty: sunshine, wisdom, and generosity.

Flagstaff Contra Dance!

Come and give the fun of Contra Dance a try! The Flagstaff Friends of Traditional Music (FFOTM) sponsor a Contra the first Saturday of each month. Contra is beginner-friendly. Instruction is offered early in the evening and a caller guides you throughout. Music is provided by a live string band. You'll have so much fun the only risk is that your cheeks will hurt from so much grinning. You don't need to come with a partner - in fact you are encouraged to switch partners throughout the evening. There will be lines and squares, do-se-dos, swinging and more - all easy for ages 8 to 80!

The next contra dance is Sat, Jan 6, 7:30-11pm at Ashurst Hall on the campus of NAU. Don't hesitate to give it a try if you've never been to a Contra Dance. If you have Contra danced before, now you know where and when it happens in Flagstaff! Call Kris or Michael Satterwhite (NACHS members) for info * 928-526-3020.

Suggested donation: FFOTM members $5, non-members $6. All ages are welcome. This is a family-friendly event..

NACHS meetings continue at substitute location

Because the Adult Center is still under construction the monthly meetings for January and February will continue to be held on the first Tuesdays from 6-8pm at the McPherson Therapeutic Recreation Center located at McPherson Park, 1650 N. Turquoise, Flagstaff, by the ice rink. The building is between the playground and the tennis courts - park on the left side of the ice rink to access the building.  We’ll keep you posted about the location for the March meeting!

Shoot the Piper?

This question was actually used on a test at NAU... From atop the Math building, approximately 64 feet above the ground, I want to shoot a small stone from a slingshot at a participant of Bagpipe Camp. Since I'm a Math teacher, I measure the angle of depression to said bagpiper, estimating it to bepi /6 radians. How far must my slingshot shoot in order to hit the kilted annoyance? (Piping isn't popular with everyone! Oh, well!)

The Chieftains coming to AZ!

UApresents welcomes the return of the beloved Chieftains on Wednesday, January 24th at Centennial Hall in Tucson. With a career that spans forty-four years and forty-two albums, six Grammy Awards, and twenty-two Grammy nominations, The Chieftains are not only Ireland's premiere musical ambassadors but also the leading force in establishing the international appeal of Celtic music.

Led by Paddy Moloney on uilleann pipes and tin whistle, the band started in 1962 to preserve traditional Irish music and took their name from Irish poet John Montadue's book, "Death of a Chieftain." The group went professional in 1975 after performing for the soundtrack to the Stanley Kubrick film Barry Lyndon, which featured their first hit and earned them an Oscar. In 1989, The Chieftains were appointed official musical ambassadors for Ireland by the Irish Republic. It was the highest official honor ever accorded a musical group, and it was well merited. The group has taken Irish music all over the world, from the Royal Albert Hall to the Great Wall of China, performed before the Pope and in the Capitol in Washington D.C.

The band has performed and recorded with a dazzling array of stars, including the Rolling Stones, U2, Van Morrison, Sting, Linda Ronstadt, Los Lobos, Ry Cooder, Emmylou Harris, Willie Nelson and Chet Atkins.Last year Paddy Moloney was awarded the British Academy of Composer and Songwriters Gold Badge of Merit, an award shared with Elton John and Paul McCartney.

Returning to Tucson are Moloney, fiddler Se*n Keane, flutist Matt Molloy,singer/bodhran player Kevin Conneff, and Irish harpist Triona Marshall.

Performance begins Wed, Jan 24, at 7:30pm, Centennial Hall, 1020 E. University Blvd on the campus of the UA. Full ticket prices: $59, $49, $36, $21 with senior, group and military discounts available. Tickets available by phone at 520-621-3341 or on the web at www.uapresents.org .
