Thanks and Fond Farewell to Mindy Hamilton

Thanks to Mindy Hamilton of Pinetop/ we had another successful Highland dance competition at the 2006 Celtic Festival. Mindy has done a fantastic job over the last several years, totally handling the dance competition and helping out at the United States School of Piping. Mindy and her family will be moving clear across the country and we will miss her hard work, dedication, peppiness, excellent attitude, and endless energy. It has been a pleasure to have been associated with Mindy and her family (Mark and Bonnie). Mark has been instrumental in organizing Piobaireachd (bagpiping) workshops, and Bonnie has been a dedicated Highland dance competitor and piping student. We will miss you all.

Hunky Guys in Kilts!

A Big THANK YOU to Ryan Seckman and his helpers for the excellent athletic competition. It was bigger than ever and appreciated by many. NACHS has had a request to post competition results on our web site, so look for the update in the near future at www.nachs.info. In our wonderful world of cyberspace, it will be another super addition for people to keep up on.

Piping at the Arizona Highland Celtic Festival and

The U.S. School of Piping

Piping competition was graciously organized by Jim Thomson. Thank you, Jim for ALL your hard work with the competition AND the U. S. School of Piping. This would not have happened without you. Something that everyone should know is that because of the U. S. School of Piping, NACHS has some of the best piping judges in the world judging at the festival. Many of you may also have enjoyed the performance by Robert Watt (Irish National Bagpiping Champion). None of this would have happened without Jim.

"The best piping school ever" has been an often-heard comment about this year’s school. The energy at the school was amazing, and the instructors are all ready to come back next year.

 Tug-o’-War

New at the festival this year was the tug-o’-war, between the Flagstaff Fire Department and the Flagstaff Police Department. The Champions were the Flagstaff Fire Department, and a very exciting event it was! The prize was a trophy that they can proudly display, and $100, to go to their favorite charity.

A Note of Thanks from Jude McKenzie, President of NACHS

In all the world there is not a word big enough to express how grateful I am for the wonderful volunteers we had for the Celtic Festival and the U. S. School of Piping. You all know who you are and I hope you can raise your hand and give yourselves a pat on the back for the great things you have done. A special thanks for those who were on the walking wounded list and still participated! For those who may not know, one of those was our vice president Barb Law who broke her arm 10 days before, and had surgery four days before the festival, and still managed to build a croft house and make Jacob sheep for the kids area. I am in awe. A special thanks to Todd Barnell who organized our newest educational exhibit, Geology of the Celtic Regions. What a winner that was! Another special thanks to Richard McKenzie who kept plugging away at his dream to have a tug-o’-war for the festival. Between Richard and Chuck Martins, we had a real winner!

Dregs Ceilidh

Say what? Yes, it's time for the draining of the kegs! We had some leftover beer and spirits from the festival and it's time we had a relaxing party! The party will be at the home of Jude and Richard McKenzie, 3393 S. Carol Dr. Call Jude for directions if you need them. August 19, about 6:00 PM. Come one, come all. Bring a swimsuit and towel if you want to get in the hot tub. Bring a musical instrument if you want to play. Bring a chair if you want to sit down. We'll have the beverages (non-alcoholic too), and eats!

Who Were Those Guys?

The fine men from Guardian Medical Transport and the Flagstaff Police Department who worked the festival to insure public safety caused quite a stir. They patrolled the grounds in KILTS and their uniform shirts while on duty.

“These guys are so approachable and so into the spirit of the festival”, “How great is it that these guys are in kilts and you can walk up to them and chat”, and “Wow, what a great look the kilts create … these guys are terrific” were but a few of the comments overheard both days of the festival.  Thanks, guys, for adding a great touch to our event.

 Mark Your Calendars – July 21 & 22, 2007

This year’s Annual Arizona Highland Celtic Festival was such a success that we are already gearing up for our 10th anniversary (can you believe it) on July 21 & 22, 2007. (as always) need volunteers to be in charge of some critical areas

·        Gate managers

·        Pub managers

·        Soda sales manager

·        Workshop manager

·        Educational Outreach Program manager

·        Membership manager

·        Set up and take down help

Please contact Jude at 928-556-3161, if you have a desire to take a more active roll in putting on the festival. Some of these jobs require very little time, apart from the weekend of the event. As has been said many times before, THIS EVENT WOULD NOT HAPPEN, IF IT WERE NOT FOR THE VOLUNTEERS.
